Capt. Mooney CemeteryCamp Capt. Mooney Cemetery; Ellis Road CemeteryYesYesTake exit 358 (SR-111/Cassat Ave.) north off of I-10 for 3/10 of a mile to Highway Ave. Turn west (left) onto Highway Ave. 8/10 mile to S. Ellis Road. Turn south (left) onto S. Ellis Rd for 3/10 mile to the cemetery. The cemetery will be on the right. The Capt. Mooney Cemetery (aka 'Ellis Road Cemetery') was copied by Thomas H. Sikes and appeared in Jacksonville Genealogical Society Quarterly (JGSQ) Volume 5, Number 1 in March 1977. At the time, he noted 43 tombstones. In JGSQ Volume 25, Number 2 (Summer 1997), George M. Gallamore, Jr. (JGS Genealogy Research Chairman) wrote that the 'new' listing reflected the information provided by the caretaker, Johnny A. Lammons, of 61 graves, 11 of which were unidentified. The cemetery was again copied on 16 Mar 2001 by Barbara Crissman and Kathy Balistreri. On Mar 10, 2006, Ann Staley and Barbara Crissman revisited the cemetery to clarify items for this publication. The tombstone photography was done by Barbara Crissman and Ann Staley. The cemetery burials are listed in the 'plots' or the 'sections' they were found for ease in finding a person. This was deemed more appropriate given the layout of the cemetery. The surviving stones indicate that interments were as early as 1877; however, if a battle was fought on the site, there were probably soldiers buried there earlier than 1877. The cemetery is in Township 2, South, Range 28, East, Section 19. It is a family cemetery of about 1-1/2 acres and is owned by the Dr. Thomas M. Palmer Chapter #2261 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy by Quit-claim deed OR4772-519 by Nathan E. Roberts to Maggie Lee, Trustee, on 29 Dec 1976. The foggy beginning of the written history of Camp Captain Mooney is undocumented, according to Larry Skinner, who, as a member of the Museum of Southern History, has been researching the cemetery for a number of years. However, Mr. Skinner credits Mrs. J E. Walker, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, with being determined to save the plot of Westside ground during construction of Interstate 10 (I-10) in the 1950's. Preserving the plot she believed to be the burial place of Captain Jesse E. Mooney and five of his Saddler's Guard Louisiana Militia, as well as five fellow CSA soldiers from Florida and South Carolina regiments, was an extremely important goal for the UDC and for Mrs. Walker. By causing I-10 to be rerouted, Mrs. Walker ensured the cemetery would be there for the continuing debate that would follow her preservation efforts. Skinner speculates that Mrs. Walker's research efforts were unintentionally incomplete and inaccurate. Citing the letters of Winston and Octavia Stephens published in Rose Cottage Chronicles, Civil War Letters of the Bryant-Stephens Families of North Florida, Skinner points out that Mrs. Walker may have confused the prominent Mooney family in Jacksonville with Captain Jesse Mooney, for whom the cemetery is named. On March 16, 1863, Confederate Captain Stephens wrote to his wife from 'In Camp at Mooney's place 5 miles out from Jacksonville.' Octavia writes in her diary on March 17 that Capt. Stephens met her that day and 'came here to Mrs. Mooney's with me.' Skinner cites sources that give Jesse Mooney's date of death as 1884. This would indicate that Captain Jesse is not the Mooney buried with the Confederate soldiers near Ellis Road. To people interested in Southern heritage, preserving the cemetery is imperative. There is plenty of time for investigating and debating. If I-10 were now ribboning through the area with thousands of motorists roaring by, all opportunity for research and honor would be lost. Ferreia Memorial CemeteryYesNoThis cemetery is located at Starratt Road and Tiki Lane in Jacksonville, FloridaContributed by Barbara Crissman. Barbara noted that many markers were very difficult to read. Some were homemade: names scratched into poured concrete, names scratched onto red bricks and some were spray painted. The complete cemetery was copied in early 2000. Cemetery information can also be found in: 1. The USGenWeb Archives. The Tombstone Transcription Project. Duval County, FL. 2. Julington Baptist Church CemeteryYesNoThis church is located in the Bayard section of Jacksonville at 12740 Snyder Street, however the cemetery is located several miles away across Philips Highway (US 1), on the south side of Julington Creek Road opposite its intersection with Lamar Shaw Road. Researched by George M. Gallamore, Jr., JGS Genealogical Research Chairman The Cemetery is approximately two acres and apparently served a small black community along St. Augustine Road when it was quite rural. The surrounding area is now heavily more modern residential. It does not seem to have a pattern to the graves as to rows and this is possibly because there are many graves without markers. There are also many missing headstones and many more are unreadable because they were homemade of a soft cement and not deeply written on and consequently the writing has worn away. An initial recording of the graves was made in April 1995 by Kathy Etheridge and Pat McClain and the cemetery was revisited in 1998 for clarifications and updates for this publication. The oldest recorded burial is of Jessie Green in 1925; however, since this grave is in the center of the cemetery and much of the area near the road has many of the missing and unreadable headstones, it is expected that the cemetery is much older. Lofton CemeteryYesNo
Manning CemeteryYesNoGoing west on Normandy Blvd. (SR 228), the cemetery is located on Manning Cemetery Road (which is plainly marked), about 3 miles west of the Cecil Field Naval Air Station entrance which fronts on Normandy Blvd. Turn left from Normandy onto Manning Cemetery Road and go less than a mile to the cemetery. On 8 January 1992, members of the JGS. Genealogical Research Committee: Chairman, Elizabeth R. Spencer, Gloria W. Southerd, and Grace H. Jarvis copied the headstones in Manning Cemetery. The cemetery comprises about two acres or more; is completely fenced, and the entrance gate is on the north side. Headstones were copied beginning west of the gate from north to south; then center north to south, and then east north to south. Note: It is obvious that the cemetery is well kept; however, there appears to be many spaces that are bare of any remnants of headstones and others showing evidence that markers had at one time been placed on graves. One explanation for this is probably the one told Miss Spencer and Mrs. Jarvis by residents living nearby when they located the cemetery. The residents said many of the stones had been demolished or badly damaged by people using them as targets for pistol and gun practice. It is a sad commentary on today's world that so little respect is demonstrated or observed for the hallowed grounds in which our loved ones have been laid to rest. Pinkston Cemetery, MariettaYesNoPinkston Cemetery is located in the Whitehouse community in western Jacksonville on Old Plank Road near its intersection with Pebble Ridge Drive. This cemetery was researched by George M. Gallamore, Jr., JGS Genealogical Research Chairman. A private cemetery, it has served the Pinkston extended family for one hundred years, and in time of hardships others in the Marietta-Whitehouse area also. Over the years family members have maintained the one-acre cemetery and there is now a newsletter reminding known volunteers of the dates for the quarterly clean-ups. Johnny A. Lammons has taken on the job of caretaker and, with the aid of some older members of the various families, is working to determine who is buried in unmarked graves. Mr. Lammons kindly furnished the following list of those buried in the cemetery with the information they had in June 1997. There have been a total of 292 graves found with 258 identified and 34 for whom no positive identification has been made. If you have an ancestral family that might have a relationship with the cemetery, you can contact Mr. Lammons at P. O. Box 701, Whitehouse, FL 32220. Cemetery information can also be found in: 1. Plummers Cove Cemetery, MandarinYesNoLocated adjacent to the south side of the Buckman Bridge (I-295) between the river and Scott Mill Road in the Mandarin section of Jacksonville. This cemetery was researched by George M. Gallamore, Jr., JGS Genealogical Research Chairman. [In 1996 the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission joined with the Trustees of the Plummer's Cove Cemetery in seeking to have the cemetery designated as a landmark site. That action was necessary to protect the property from deterioration, vandalism and residential encroachment. The Application was approved by Jacksonville City Council and the following was excerpted from that application.] Constituting approximately 1.71 acres, the Plummer's Cove Cemetery is covered by a mature tree canopy, the cemetery is presently not fenced, thus the boundaries are not readily distinguishable from the adjacent residential properties. There are three family plots identified by wrought iron fencing. Unfortunately a large limb had fallen on one of the plots, damaging the wrought iron fencing and covering the markers. There are also some individual markers not grouped in a family plot. The age and actual number of graves in the cemetery is not known, however, based on records, surveys, and oral tradition, a number of graves have been identified: Cemetery information can also be found in: 1.
