World War I – Duval County, Florida Project

World War I, also known as the Great War, started for the U.S. when the U.S. Congress declared war on Germany on 6 April 1917. The Selective Service Act was enacted on 18 May 1917 and drafted some 2.8 million men. There were also some 2 million volunteers. Florida, alone, supplied over forty-two thousand men and women to the cause before the war ended on 11 November 1918.

To help in commemorating these courageous men and women,  JGS is embarking on an indexing project to gather the names of those who participated from Duval County – an estimated seven thousand men and women. Volunteers are helping with scanning, typing, and proofing.
